Michael Lyne
20th Century Painter
English, 1912-1989
Stella Walker, the well known British Sporting art historian, once said that, "time will confirm that Michael Lyne ranks as one of the most important artists of his generation." Others have said that his death marked the end of an era of great sporting artists. Although Lyne greatly admired both Munnings and Edwards and acknowledged that they were major influences on his early career, he soon developed a style that was distinctly his own. He worked both in watercolors and oils and tackled all sporting subjects from beagling to racing. Not afraid of color or a bold brush stroke, his pictures are full of light and action.
